Ludwig Von 88

Born in the Parisian alternative scene at the start of the 1980s, Ludwig Von 88 formed in 1983 in the wake of squats, the Pali-Kao and the Île-de-France underground. The group developed very early a blend of punk rock, pop punk, French alternative rock, reggae and absurd humor, with lyrics ranging from social satire to self-avowed nonsense. Its trajectory is linked to a shifting lineup, but the core formed around Karim Berrouka, Bruno Garcia, Charlu Ombre and Jean-Mi Rossignol has left a lasting mark on Ludwig Von 88’s identity, notably through the use of programmed rhythm and a taste for catchy choruses, tonal shifts and deliberately offbeat arrangements. After Houla la ! in 1986 and Houlala 2: La Mission in 1987, Ludwig Von 88 released several albums through the 1990s, among them Ce jour heureux est plein d’allégresse (1990), Tout pour le trash (1992), 17 plombs pour péter les tubes (1994), Hiroshima (50 ans d’inconscience) (1995) and Prophètes et Nains de jardin (1996). Put on hold after the late 1990s, the band released La révolution n’est pas un dîner de gala in 2001 before returning to the stage in 2016. Ludwig Von 88 resumed its recording activity with 20 chansons optimistes pour en finir avec le futur in 2019, then Les 4 Saisons in 2023, extending an aesthetic where punk, pop parody and a spirit of derision remain closely linked.
