Jowell & Randy
Formed in the early 2000s on Puerto Rico's urban scene, Jowell & Randy bring together rapper and singer Joel Muñoz Martínez (Jowell) and Randy Ortiz Acevedo (Randy) around a perreo-oriented reggaeton that alternates high-pitched vocals, rapid phrasing and sung choruses. The duo first gained attention on compilations and in local clubs before joining the collective Casa de Leones, active around the self-titled 2007 album that firmly established them in Latin reggaeton. Shortly after, Jowell & Randy released Los Más Sueltos del Reggaetón (2007), El Momento (2010) and Sobredoxis (2013), a series of recordings that consolidated a style blending classic reggaeton rhythms, dancehall influences, hip-hop touches and more melodic passages. After several mixtapes and collaborations within the Caribbean and U.S. urban scene, the duo returned with Viva el Perreo in 2020, a project focused on straightforward song structures and dance-oriented productions. Regularly featured on collective tracks and at festivals dedicated to Latin music, Jowell & Randy thus sit at the intersection between so-called "old school" reggaeton and its more recent evolution toward trap latino and dembow.
