Jah Mason

Born Andre Johnson and hailing from the parish of Manchester in Jamaica, Jah Mason is rooted in the reggae roots and conscious dancehall, with a chant-deejaying style that blends Rastafari spirituality, social themes, and more soulful tracks. Active since the early 1990s, he first released in 1991 the single 'Selassie I Call We' under the name Perry Mason on Junior Reid's label, before adopting the name Jah Mason after his rapprochement with the David House circle and his induction into the Bobo Ashanti order in the mid-1990s. His trajectory then builds between singles widely circulated in the Jamaican reggae circuit, occasional collaborations with Jah Cure, and regular presence on sound system stages and reggae-focused festivals. Jah Mason develops a direct style, rooted in the one drop and Jamaican digital productions, where vocal fervor remains central. His discography expands from 2002 with Keep Your Joy and Working So Hard, then Unlimited in 2003, Most Royal in 2004, Rise in 2005, Princess Gone...The Saga Bed and Wheat and Tears in 2006, Life Is Just a Journey in 2007, No Matter the Time in 2008, Keep Ya Head Up in 2010 and Love & Wisdom in 2015. Through these releases, Jah Mason maintains a faithful line to contemporary roots reggae while moving between Jamaican and European labels.
