Richie Spice
Born in Rock Hall in the parish of Saint Andrew, Jamaica, Richie Spice grew up in a musical environment that included his brothers Spanner Banner, Pliers and Snatcha Dog. Active since the mid-1990s, Richie Spice developed a roots reggae style tinged with nu-roots, characterized by a flexible vocal delivery, often clear melodies and lyrics focused on Rastafarian spirituality, social realities and everyday life. After early work with producer Dennis "Star" Hayles, he recorded with Clive Hunt and circulated tracks such as "Time So Rough", "Grooving My Girl" and "Earth A Run Red." In the 1990s Richie Spice also toured Europe and the United States with Spanner Banner, Chaka Demus, Pliers and Rita Marley, before gaining wider visibility in the early 2000s around the 5th Element circle. His discography includes Living Ain’t Easy (1999), Spice in Your Life (2004), In the Streets to Africa (2007), Gideon Boot (2008), Book of Job (2011) and Soothing Sounds (2012). For Richie Spice, conscious writing coexists with more sentimental songs in an aesthetic faithful to classic Jamaican forms while incorporating a more contemporary production.
