Capleton
Born Clifton George Bailey III in Islington, Saint Mary parish, Jamaica, Capleton rose to prominence on Kingston’s dancehall scene from the late 1980s after moving there as a young adult following a rural upbringing. His early work included the musical African Star in 1985 and initial singles recorded in Jamaica, with a wider breakthrough in the early 1990s through tracks such as “Alms House” and “Good So.” Capleton developed a tense, fast and percussive vocal style that sits between dancehall deejaying (toasting) and reggae singing, with lyrics focused on Rastafari spirituality, social issues and a recurring fire imagery. This orientation strengthened during the 1990s, notably on the albums Prophecy (1995) and I‑Testament (1997), which helped open him to an international audience and featured collaborations with US hip‑hop artists like Method Man and Q‑Tip. Later he emphasized the roots dimension of his music on More Fire (2000), Still Blazin (2002) and Reign of Fire (2004), while remaining active within reggae and dancehall circuits—sound systems, Caribbean stages and international festivals. Capleton remains associated with a direct, militant and spiritual expression of Jamaican reggae.
