Jesse Royal
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Jesse Royal belongs to the reggae revival generation that emerged in the early 2010s, with music that blends roots reggae, dub and dancehall inflections in a vocal style situated between singing and toasting. First noticed through a series of singles and the 2012 project In Comes the Small Axe, Jesse Royal developed songwriting focused on social issues, Rastafari spirituality and Jamaica's political memory, while retaining a very direct melodic sense. His trajectory was built first on the local scene before expanding into international reggae circuits, where Jesse Royal appears alongside artists of the same generation. He released Lily of Da Valley in 2017 and Royal in 2021, two albums that extend this direction by making roots reggae traditions coexist with more contemporary production. In Jesse Royal's work the groove remains loose, arrangements favor bass and pulse, and the whole retains a clear anchoring in Jamaica's musical history.
