Anohni
Born in Chichester in the United Kingdom, singer, composer and visual artist Anohni grew up between England, California and then New York, where she immersed herself from the 1990s in the queer performance scene and founded the group Antony and the Johnsons. With that formation, Anohni built a repertoire of intimate ballads and orchestral chamber pop, released on several albums between 2000 and 2010, including I Am a Bird Now (2005) and Swanlights (2010), which established her singular voice in a space between indie music, cabaret and classical influences. Under the name Anohni, the artist then reoriented her work toward electronic and experimental pop, marked by synthetic textures, dance-adjacent rhythms and a more overtly political writing, as shown by the album Hopelessness (2016) and the EP Paradise (2017). Anohni's lyrics address gender identity, ecology, surveillance and contemporary forms of violence, while retaining an introspective dimension. In 2023, My Back Was A Bridge For You To Cross, credited to Anohni and the Johnsons, returned this inquiry to more organic instrumentation, nourished by soul, slow rock and spare arrangements. Present on both experimental stages and in more established concert halls, Anohni continues a practice that intersects songwriting, performance and occasional collaborations with musicians from pop, electronic and contemporary music.
