Anna Calvi
Born in London in 1980, Anna Calvi develops a body of work positioned between art rock, art pop, indie rock and experimental rock, with the guitar at its core and a deep, lyrically inflected voice. Trained in music at the University of Southampton after studying the violin, she first played in several bands, including Cheap Hotel, before attracting attention on the London scene in the late 2000s, notably alongside Johnny Flynn, and later opening for Interpol and Grinderman. Her debut album, Anna Calvi, was released in 2011 on Domino, followed by One Breath in 2013 and Hunter in 2018. In 2014 she issued the EP Strange Weather, consisting of covers and featuring David Byrne. Her universe blends dramatic tension, sombre melodies, cinematic-sounding arrangements and influences ranging from rock to classical. Over the years she expanded into composing for screen and stage, writing the music for the opera The Sandman in 2017 and then for the series Peaky Blinders from 2019. In 2020, Hunted revisited and transformed the songs from Hunter with several guest artists.
