Nadine Shah
Born in 1986 in Whitburn, Tyne and Wear, Nadine Shah is part of a British scene where indie rock, post-punk, folk rock and a jazz-influenced sensibility meet — she began exploring jazz after moving to London at 17. Of English, Norwegian and Pakistani descent, Shah early on developed a taut, introspective songwriting voice, supported by a deep vocal timbre and often a confrontational delivery. After the EPs Aching Bones (2012) and Dreary Town (2013), she released Love Your Dum and Mad (2013) and Fast Food (2015), both produced with Ben Hillier, a key collaborator in shaping her sound. She also appeared that year on Ghostpoet’s Shedding Skin, and in 2016 co-wrote the stage music for Get Carter at Newcastle’s Northern Stage. With Holiday Destination (2017) she heightened the political and social edge of her songs; the album was shortlisted for the 2018 Mercury Prize. Kitchen Sink followed in 2020, still dark but more domestic and narrative in tone, and in 2024 Filthy Underneath continued her writing, addressing loss, addiction and rebuilding in a spare, direct rock format.
