Howard Carpendale

Born in 1946 in Durban, South Africa, Howard Carpendale established himself over the years as one of the notable voices of German‑language popular music, having been based in Germany since the late 1960s. First noticed in the schlager scene, Carpendale developed a musical world that ranged from orchestral pop and sentimental ballads to mid‑tempo tracks influenced by Anglo‑American variety, favouring romantic and melancholic German‑language lyrics. His career is built on regular studio albums and numerous radio singles, as well as recurring appearances on major German television music shows, which helped secure his place in the entertainment music landscape of the 1970s and 1980s. Beyond the schlager image, his repertoire gradually shifted toward a more mature pop style with arrangements often tinged with soft rock, emphasizing voice and song storytelling. He also toured extensively in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, where he gained a loyal audience, and occasionally appeared as an actor in film and television productions. After contemplating retirement from the stage in the early 2000s, Carpendale returned from the late 2000s with new projects — including re‑recordings, collaborations with orchestras and large‑scale concerts — extending a career built over several decades of German‑language popular song.
