Born in 1946 in Durban, South Africa, Howard Carpendale established himself over the years as one of the notable voices of German‑language popular music, having been based in Germany since the late 1960s. First noticed in the schlager scene, Carpendale developed a musical world that ranged from orchestral pop and sentimental ballads to mid‑tempo tracks influenced by Anglo‑American variety, favouring romantic and melancholic German‑language lyrics.
