Jean-Michel Jarre

From the 1970s Jean‑Michel Jarre became a key figure in the development of electronic music in France, following a stint at Pierre Schaeffer’s Groupe de recherches musicales that had a lasting influence on his approach to sound. He rose to prominence with the album Oxygène (1976), featuring long instrumental pieces built around synthetic pads and repeating melodic motifs, followed by Équinoxe (1978) and Les Chants Magnétiques (1981), which established a style combining ambient textures, minimal rhythmic sequences and touches of instrumental pop. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s—from Zoolook (1984) and Rendez‑Vous (1986) to Chronologie (1993)—Jarre explored sampled voices and structures closer to dance music, while also developing large urban concerts that paired electronic music with monumental projections and light shows. From the 2000s onward, with records such as Métamorphoses (2000) and the two‑part Electronica project (2015–2016), he expanded collaborations with producers, composers and visual artists and moved toward immersive projects, including multichannel formats and virtual‑reality performances, all grounded in a melodic, cinematic electronic writing.
