Tangerine Dream

Founded in Berlin in 1967 by Edgar Froese, Tangerine Dream formed itself in the context of German krautrock before developing instrumental electronic music marked by ambient textures, repetitive sequences, cosmic moods and a progressive approach to composition. After a start still close to rock experimentation on Electronic Meditation in 1970, the group refined over the 1970s an aesthetics that would be associated with the Berlin School, notably with Phaedra in 1974, Rubycon in 1975 and Stratosfear in 1976. The lineup often changed around Froese, with important periods alongside Christopher Franke, Peter Baumann, then Johannes Schmoelling, Paul Haslinger or Jerome Froese. Tangerine Dream also pursued a very fruitful parallel activity for cinema, television and video games, composing among others the original soundtracks to Sorcerer in 1977, Thief in 1981, Risky Business in 1984, Legend in 1986 and Near Dark in 1987. After Edgar Froese's death in 2015, Tangerine Dream continued according to the directions he had left, with Thorsten Quaeschning, Hoshiko Yamane and, since 2020, Paul Frick. This formation prolongs the band's heritage between long evolving pieces, ambient textures, sequenced pulsations and live improvisations, as illustrated by Quantum Gate in 2017 and Raum in 2022.
