Donovan Woods
Nourished by the Canadian folk scene, Donovan Woods has, since the mid-2000s, developed a writing style focused on intimate stories and everyday detail. A native of Sarnia, Ontario, later based in Toronto and a regular presence in Nashville, Donovan Woods moves between folk, country, and Americana, favoring stripped-down acoustic ballads and restrained vocals that put the lyrics front and center. After self-releasing his debut album, The Hold Up (2007), he sharpened his narrative style on The Widowmaker (2010) and Don’t Get Too Grand (2013), before leaning further into folk-rock and contemporary country on Hard Settle, Ain’t Troubled (2016). Both Ways (2018) cemented his dual path as singer and songwriter, with Woods dividing his time between his own records and writing for other artists on the North American country scene. With Without People (2020), he pushed a minimalist approach even further, centered on guitar, subtle harmonies, and understated arrangements. Across tours in North America and Europe, Donovan Woods has established himself as a songwriter who favors intimate formats—from small-ensemble shows to more electric configurations—while maintaining a classic, melody-forward songwriter’s aesthetic.
