Clipse

Formed in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Clipse brings together brothers Terrence “Pusha T” Thornton and Gene “No Malice” Thornton, first noticed in the mid-1990s on the East Coast hip-hop scene. The duo developed in the orbit of Pharrell Williams and producer collective The Neptunes, whose stripped-down, percussive instrumentals left a lasting mark on Clipse’s aesthetic. Their first widely distributed album, Lord Willin’ (2002), positioned the group in a rap rooted in narrative detail, the underground economy, and strong storytelling—a thread continued on Hell Hath No Fury (2006) and Til The Casket Drops (2009), where the sound broadened toward more open textures while remaining grounded in hard-hitting hip-hop. In parallel, Clipse led the Re-Up Gang project and a run of mixtapes that reinforced their footing in densely written street rap. After the duo stepped back in the early 2010s, Pusha T and No Malice pursued solo careers while occasionally reuniting—most notably on Kanye West–affiliated productions—thus keeping Clipse present across a web of rap collaborations and in the memory of the Virginia Beach scene.
