DJ Krush
Born in Tokyo in 1962 as Hideaki Ishi, DJ Krush came up during the early years of Japanese hip‑hop — first through breakdance crews and later with the Krush Posse collective in the late 1980s. He developed an early instrumental approach to hip‑hop, centered on slow or fractured rhythms, dark textures, dub and ambient atmospheres, and a marked use of jazz and soul. This aesthetic crystallized on Krush (1994) and continued on Strictly Turntablized and Meiso (1995), released at a time when DJ Krush was also active on European and North American scenes associated with trip‑hop, abstract hip‑hop and downtempo. His discography alternates between solo albums and more cross‑disciplinary projects, notably Ki‑Oku (1996) with trumpeter Toshinori Kondo, followed by Kakusei (1998), Zen (2001), Shinso (2002) and Jaku (2004). After sustained activity on stage and in production, he released Butterfly Effect (2015), Kiseki (2017), Cosmic Yard (2018) and Trickster (2020). DJ Krush’s trajectory remains tied to an atmospheric, precise and often contemplative form of hip‑hop, crafted as much for listening as for mixing.
