Kruder & Dorfmeister

The Austrian duo Kruder & Dorfmeister formed in Vienna in the early 1990s around Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister. Initially active in local clubs and radio, they soon gained recognition on the European downtempo scene. Rooted in a blend of trip hop, dub, slow breakbeat and jazz influences, Kruder & Dorfmeister developed a sonic aesthetic centered on moderate tempos, deep bass lines and a pronounced use of collage and space. The duo released the EP “G‑Stoned” in 1993 and then organized their activity around the Vienna label G‑Stone Recordings, which supported the emergence of this slower, atmospheric electronic scene. In 1996 the compilation “DJ‑Kicks: Kruder & Dorfmeister” introduced their DJ work and selection to a wider audience, followed in 1998 by “The K&D Sessions”, a set of remixes that synthesizes their approach to sound—between reworking existing tracks and very detailed production. Alongside Peter Kruder’s (Peace Orchestra) and Richard Dorfmeister’s (Tosca) individual projects, Kruder & Dorfmeister continued to perform DJ sets and hybrid live shows, often in clubs, festivals and venues oriented toward electronic music. After a long period without a major new studio project, the duo released the album “1995” in 2020, composed of sessions recorded in the mid‑1990s, which repositioned Kruder & Dorfmeister in the contemporary landscape while remaining true to the downtempo and dub palette that defined their identity.
