Howie B.
Born in Glasgow in 1963, Howard Bernstein, known as Howie B, built his career between the British scene and London studios, where in the 1980s he moved from technical assistant to sound engineer. His path early on crossed Siouxsie and the Banshees and then Soul II Soul, before extending to work with Massive Attack, Tricky, Björk, U2 and Robbie Robertson. As a producer, DJ and musician, Howie B operates in a range that blends trip‑hop, electronica, ambient, dub and club‑derived grooves, with a marked taste for velvety textures, supple rhythms and oblique constructions. As a solo artist he released Music for Babies (1996), Turn the Dark Off (1997), Snatch (1999), Folk (2001) and Down with the Dawn (2014), while also participating in group projects, notably Skylab. In the early 1990s he founded the Pussyfoot label, a space for his personal projects and an open electronic aesthetic between collage, downtempo and accessible experimentation. Alongside his records, Howie B composes for film, television and other visual formats, continuing a practice in which sound work remains central.
