Julia Cumming
Born in New York in 1996 and raised in the East Village, Julia Cumming has moved since her teens between indie pop and rock infused with glam and psychedelia. After an early stint in Supercute!, a project formed in 2009 with Rachel Trachtenburg and June Lei, she joined Sunflower Bean in 2013, a Brooklyn-based trio where she became the singer and bassist alongside Nick Kivlen and Olive Faber. In Bushwick’s DIY scene the band honed a sound that blends glam rock, indie rock, psych rock and pop melodies, first on the EP Show Me Your Seven Secrets (2015) and then on the albums Human Ceremony (2016) and Twentytwo in Blue (2018). Alongside Sunflower Bean, Julia Cumming has also performed solo and appeared in 2021 on Manic Street Preachers’ track “The Secret He Had Missed.” Her personal songwriting continues this trajectory in a more direct register, centered on the voice, melodic bass lines and a way of making rock energy converse with bright pop. In 2026 she opened a new chapter under her own name with the album Julia, released on April 24.
