youbet
Led by New York singer-songwriter Nick Llobet, youbet is part of Brooklyn's independent scene, blending DIY pop, indie rock and subtle psychedelia. The project revolves around songs that are at once direct and unstable: Llobet's voice alternates between apparent fragility and more cutting lines, supported by arrangements that exploit contrasts in texture, abrupt rhythmic shifts and deliberately warped melodies. With the album Compare & Despair, released in 2020 on Ba Da Bing Records, youbet crystallized this sonic language by stacking off-kilter ballads, bursts of guitar and almost cartoonish passages in an aesthetic close to home recording but conceived as a full studio effort. On stage, youbet performs as a band centered on Llobet's compositions, which allows the heavily arranged material to take on a more immediate energy while retaining its taste for displacement and dynamic change. By linking melodic American pop culture to a more experimental approach to songwriting, youbet has developed a repertoire that moves between short formats, albums and live performances within a network of independent venues and labels.
