Camilla Sparksss

Under the pseudonym Camilla Sparksss, Swiss-Canadian musician and visual artist Barbara Lehnhoff has developed a solo project born between Kenora, Ontario, where she grew up, and Switzerland, where she later settled. Camilla Sparksss sits at the crossroads of electro-noise pop, darkwave and experimental electronics driven by massive rhythms, dense layers of synths and vocals that are chanted or sung in a very direct way. In parallel with co-founding the post-punk band Peter Kernel and the independent Swiss label On The Camper Records, she has maintained a continuous live activity since 2013. Her first album For You The Wild (2014) established the foundations of a universe tense between pop and abrasion, continued by Brutal (2019), which foregrounds noise textures, and Brutal Remix (2020), where her tracks are reinterpreted by several producers including Fakear and Rebeka Warrior. In 2022 Camilla Sparksss co-signed, with Alec Ounsworth and Eva Geist, the piece The Sound of This Place, born from a one-hour live composition for the Ypsigrock festival in Sicily. She has toured in Europe, North America and North Africa, notably opening for The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and A Place to Bury Strangers, and performs in clubs, theatres and festivals such as Kilbi Festival, Eurosonic and the Swiss Cultural Centre in Paris, while continuing her work with Peter Kernel, which was nominated for the Swiss Music Prize in 2016.
