Calyx
Active since the late 1990s in the United Kingdom, Calyx sits within a dark and tense drum and bass line, at the crossroads of techstep, neurofunk, hardstep and darkstep. The project originated in London around Larry Cons and Chris Rush, before becoming Larry Cons's solo project in the early 2000s. After a first single released in 1998 on Audio Couture, sub-label of Moving Shadow, Calyx develops a precise and dense sound, marked by dry rhythms, metallic basses and a writing style inherited as much from jungle as from the harder forms of British drum and bass. This trajectory passes through releases on Moving Shadow, Metalheadz, Renegade Hardware and Subtitles, then through a durable companionship with Norwegian producer Teebee. Together, Calyx & Teebee sign the album Anatomy in 2007 on their Momentum Music label, before continuing this work as a duo on RAM Records with All or Nothing in 2012, 1x1 in 2016 and Plates in 2022. Solo, Calyx released the album No Turning Back in 2005, then returned to this format under his own name with new productions from 2022 on Critical Music. On stage as well as in DJ sets, Calyx remains associated with the most nerve-racking and industrial branch of London drum and bass.
