Sort Sol
A Danish scene from Copenhagen, Sort Sol emerged in the late 1970s under the name Sods. Initially rooted in abrasive punk, the band gradually steered its music toward a more experimental rock. Centered on Steen Jørgensen’s deep, detached voice and featuring members such as Knud Odde and Tomas Ortved, the group shifted its language from post‑punk and cold wave to a blend of alternative rock, dark atmospheres and more melancholic melodies. Still recording as Sods, Minutes to Go (1979) and Under en sort sol (1980) established the foundations of a taut, minimal aesthetic that Sort Sol complicated with Dagger & Guitar (1983) and Everything That Rises Must Converge (1987). The 1990s saw the band opening up to poppier structures and broader arrangements on Flow My Firetear (1991), Glamourpuss (1993) and Unspoiled Monsters (1996), before a more direct turn with Snakecharmer (2001). After a long hiatus from the stage and studio, Sort Sol resumed activity in the 2010s and released Stor Langsom Stjerne in 2017, continuing a trajectory marked by oscillations between atmospheric rock, noise‑tinged tension and melodic songwriting.
