Diana Krall

A pianist and jazz singer born in 1964 in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall began piano studies at an early age and went on to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston on a scholarship. After settling in Los Angeles, she was encouraged by bassist Ray Brown, which steered her toward the jazz trio format and a repertoire centered on the Great American Songbook. Her first recordings in the early 1990s set the stage for a career that crystallized with All for You: A Dedication to the Nat King Cole Trio (1996), followed by Love Scenes (1997), where her swinging piano and low, smoky timbre took center stage. With When I Look in Your Eyes (1999) and The Look of Love (2001), Krall developed a blend of orchestral ballads, standards, and bossa nova, often arranged with a subdued, velvety aesthetic. The live album Live in Paris (2002) captured her stagecraft, honed by trio tours and major international festivals. The Girl in the Other Room (2004), co-written with Elvis Costello, brought more original compositions alongside covers. Thereafter, Krall alternated projects focused on standards — From This Moment On (2006), Quiet Nights (2009), Turn Up the Quiet (2017) — with more pronounced forays into pop and vocal jazz on Glad Rag Doll (2012) and Wallflower (2015). Her collaboration with Tony Bennett on Love Is Here to Stay (2018) and the album This Dream of You (2020) extend a trajectory where swing, slow ballads, and Brazilian influences intersect, always anchored by Krall’s voice and piano.
