Weakened Friends
Based in Portland, Maine, Weakened Friends sits in an alternative-rock lineage that blends melodic indie rock, power-pop energy, and grunge-leaning guitars. The band centers on singer-guitarist Sonia Sturino, originally from Canada, and bassist Annie Hoffman, a core duo that defines the group’s sonic identity, with different drummers joining at various times. After several digital releases and EPs in the mid-2010s, the outfit issued its first full-length, "Common Blah," in 2018—marked by short songs, saturated riffs, and a direct vocal delivery that addresses everyday fatigue, relationships, and disillusionment. In 2021, Weakened Friends continued along that path with "Quitter," where the trio hones a balance between noise-laden tension and more overtly pop choruses, remaining distinctly guitar-driven, built on simple structures and a deliberately rough-edged sound. Active on the independent venue circuit and on small North American tours, Weakened Friends asserts itself as a rock project fueled by spontaneous songwriting and a taste for concise forms.
