Thumpasaurus
Within the Los Angeles music scene, Thumpasaurus occupies a singular space where funk, punk, and experimental pop collide into an aesthetic that is both danceable and deliberately absurd. Formed in the mid-2010s around musicians including alumni of the University of Southern California, the band first made its mark in the city’s clubs and independent spaces before gradually expanding to stages across the United States and Europe. The project operates as a tight-knit core of players that invites collaborators, fostering collective songwriting marked by humor, chanted gang vocals, and prominent bass lines. Musically, Thumpasaurus blends funk heritage, punk energy, disco hues, nods to new wave, and touches of jazz, with a pronounced taste for repetitive refrains and sudden tempo shifts. The 2018 album The Book of Thump formalizes this mix in the studio while staying close to the spirit of their live shows, where the band leans into performance with simple staging, deliberately rough-around-the-edges choreography, and direct, face-to-face interaction with the audience. Across its singles and EPs, Thumpasaurus continues to explore this hybrid territory, oscillating between minimalist pop songcraft, abrasive funk, and party-music pastiche, all with a firmly DIY ethos rooted in Los Angeles’s alternative scene.
