Liam Lynch

Born in Petersburg, Virginia, under the name William Patrick Niederst, Liam Lynch has since the mid-1990s pursued a career spanning alternative rock, lo-fi pop, and comedy rock, with a marked fondness for short formats, offbeat songs, and bricolaged visual universes. Trained in part at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, Liam Lynch divides his work between music, directing, and writing, and began to gain visibility with The Sifl and Olly Show, a puppet series co-created with Matt Crocco, broadcast from 1998 on MTV. His solo discography includes Eel (1995), We’re All Nighters (2002), Fake Songs (2003), How to Be a Satellite (2006), Get Up on the Raft (2008), The Middle (2011), New Springs (2014), The Whole Damn Thing (2017), Be An Owl (2018), Crowing (2021), and What the Moths Say (2023). Liam Lynch remains associated with the track United States of Whatever, released on Fake Songs, whose minimalist spoken-writing style nicely sums up a sound blending guitar, pop melodies, dry absurdity, and a sense of pastiche. In parallel, Liam Lynch maintains a regular activity as a director for music and film, with videos for Tenacious D, Queens of the Stone Age, Royal Blood, Weird Al Yankovic, or They Might Be Giants, and the feature film Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny (2006).
