Formed in Leeds in February 2025, The North continues the local indie scene with a classic four-piece line-up and a sound centered on guitars, bass, drums and a prominent lead vocal. At the heart of the band is Billy Memphis, singer and guitarist, who left Scarborough as a teenager to move to Leeds, where he spent several years attending gigs and navigating the city’s musical fabric before assembling The North with drummer Sian Keates, guitarist Kobi Griggs and bassist Macca Boylan. The North develops a direct, taut and melodic indie-rock aesthetic, conceived for both the stage and the studio, with an approach that values collective energy over posturing. In a short time The North has started to carve out a place on local stages and within circuits for emerging British bands, driven by a tightly honed repertoire and a live presence that is already central to their identity. Billy Memphis remains the band’s most visible figure, but The North is built as an ensemble, in the dynamic of a young group born from an urban environment where gigs and encounters have played a decisive role.
