Thee Sacred Souls

Since the late 2010s, Thee Sacred Souls have been shaping a retro soul in San Diego, California, drawing on American productions of the 1960s and 1970s. The trio, centered on singer Josh Lane and the rhythm section of bassist Sal Samano and drummer Alex Garcia, has developed a repertoire that blends soul ballads, mid‑tempo R&B, sweet soul and chicano‑soul influences. Signed to Daptone via its Penrose imprint, Thee Sacred Souls first released several 45s, including “Can I Call You Rose?” and “Weak for Your Love”, before issuing their self‑titled debut album in 2022, built with a stripped‑back analog soul aesthetic. Thee Sacred Souls' songwriting emphasizes direct melodies, supple bass lines, restrained drumming, and understated horns and backing vocals that evoke both West Coast soul traditions and certain Philadelphia sounds. In the studio as on stage, Thee Sacred Souls belong to a generation of bands that revisit classic soul in the present, keeping a strong grounding in period arrangements while favoring original compositions.
