Durand Jones & The Indications
Formed in the mid-2010s around Indiana University in Bloomington, the American soul outfit Durand Jones & The Indications brings together singer Durand Jones, originally from Louisiana, with Aaron Frazer, Blake Rhein and several musicians from the same local scene. The group drew attention with a self-titled debut in 2016, released by independent label Colemine Records, which laid the groundwork for a sound inspired by 1960s–1970s soul and R&B, blending slow grooves, tight vocal harmonies and touches of funk and gospel. Durand Jones & The Indications expanded on this on American Love Call (2019), where brass and string arrangements support lyrics dealing with social issues and contemporary romantic relationships, and on Private Space (2021), which brings in more disco colors and modern soul while retaining a strong melodic focus. Active on North American and European stages, the band alternates between small venues and festivals specializing in soul, jazz and independent music, while its members pursue side projects—most notably the solo careers of Durand Jones and Aaron Frazer—which extend the group’s vocal aesthetic and soul sensibility in other forms.
