Clan of Xymox
Formed in the early 1980s in Nijmegen, Netherlands around Ronny Moorings, Clan of Xymox is part of the darkwave and gothic rock current that emerged from post‑punk, blending cold guitars, melodic synthesizer lines and dancefloor‑oriented electronic rhythms. Spotted by the British label 4AD, Clan of Xymox released a self‑titled debut in 1985 and Medusa in 1986, which established the band’s dark, melancholic and strongly atmospheric aesthetic, before a more synth‑pop and club‑oriented period under the name Xymox in the late 1980s with albums such as Twist of Shadows (1989) and Phoenix (1991). From Hidden Faces (1997) onward, Clan of Xymox returned to a denser, more introspective darkwave, developed across a long series of albums including Creatures (1999), Notes from the Underground (2001), Farewell (2003), Breaking Point (2006), Days of Black (2017), Spider on the Wall (2020) and Limbo (2021). Built around Ronny Moorings’ deep voice and his compositions, Clan of Xymox has maintained steady activity in the studio and on stage, regularly touring the European and North American gothic circuits, where its mix of coldwave, dark synth‑pop and atmospheric rock has continued to evolve over the decades.
