The Sisters of Mercy
Formed in Leeds, England, at the turn of the 1980s, The Sisters of Mercy established themselves between post-punk, gothic rock and dark new wave, built around Andrew Eldritch’s deep voice and programmed rhythms. The band’s early singles and the album "First and Last and Always" (1985) placed them on the British independent scene, before a reconfiguration around Eldritch steered the project toward more expansive textures on "Floodland" (1987), characterized by keyboard-rich atmospheres. With "Vision Thing" (1990), The Sisters of Mercy moved toward a more rock-oriented sound with more direct guitars, while retaining songwriting focused on atmosphere and repetitive motifs. The departures of founding members — notably Gary Marx, and later the duo Wayne Hussey/Craig Adams who left to form The Mission — shifted The Sisters of Mercy toward a variable-geometry lineup centered on Eldritch and a changing core of musicians. Primarily active on stage since the 1990s, the band continues to tour internationally, reinterpreting a repertoire that mixes classic tracks and previously unreleased material, within a dark aesthetic where rock, electronic and alternative pop influences coexist.
