Slow Joy
Behind Slow Joy is Esteban Flores, a musician based in Dallas, Texas, who launched this solo project in the early 2020s with a sound that sits between grunge, shoegaze, alternative rock and emo. Slow Joy first drew attention with the EPs Soft Slam in 2022 and Wildflower in 2023, before the debut album A Joy So Slow at Times I Don’t Think It’s Coming was released in May 2025. Slow Joy’s sound relies on dense guitars, melancholic melodies and a constant tension between distortion, vocal fragility and more direct surges derived from American alternative rock. In several interviews Esteban Flores links the birth of Slow Joy to a period of grief and committed work with a therapist, which illuminates the central role of introspection in his lyrics. Over successive releases, Slow Joy has developed a compact songwriting approach—both abrasive and sensitive—rooted in an independent scene where emo sensibilities and shoegaze textures intersect without tipping into pure nostalgia.
