Pedro Abrunhosa
Born in Porto in 1960, Pedro Abrunhosa initially trained in composition, musical analysis and double bass before establishing himself on the Portuguese jazz scene of the 1980s as a musician, arranger, teacher and co‑founder of the Porto Jazz School. After several collective projects, including Máquina do Som, he began in 1994 to move toward a more song‑centred path with Viagens, recorded with Bandemónio, where pop, soul, funk and rhythm and blues intersect with a jazz‑informed writing style. This approach continued with Tempo (1996), Silêncio (1999), Momento (2002), Luz (2007), Longe (2010), Contramão (2013) and Espiritual (2018), in a repertoire built around voice, piano and arrangements that alternate between orchestral formats, relaxed grooves and rockier textures. He has also composed for film and theatre and appears in Manoel de Oliveira’s film A Carta (1999). Over the course of his career, Pedro Abrunhosa has worked with artists from jazz, soul and the lusophone song tradition—among them Maceo Parker, Carlos do Carmo, Rui Veloso and Caetano Veloso—while retaining strong roots in Porto and Portugal.
