António Zambujo

Born in Beja, in Alentejo, António Zambujo develops an approach to Portuguese singing where fado crosses very early with cante alentejano, the region's collective vocal tradition, as well as a more flexible acoustic writing, open to popular song and Lusophone musics. António Zambujo emerges in the early 2000s with Por Meu Cante in 2004, after O Mesmo Fado in 2002, then refines this language on Outro Sentido in 2007, Guia in 2010 and Quinto in 2012. His way of singing, restrained and very articulated, moves away from a strictly classical fado to favor sober arrangements, often calm tempos and a natural flow between tradition and contemporary repertoire. Based in the fado circuits but also present on international stages, António Zambujo further broadens his range with Rua da Emenda in 2014, then with Até Pensei Que Fosse Minha in 2016, devoted to Chico Buarque's songs, which underscores his link with Brazilian music. He continues with Do Avesso in 2018, Voz e Violão in 2021 and Cidade in 2023. Over the course of his career, António Zambujo has built a repertoire where the intimacy of fado, the cadence of Alentejo and a sensitivity close to bossa nova and MPB coexist without rupture.
