Emmet Cohen
Born in Miami in 1990 and raised in Montclair, New Jersey, Emmet Cohen belongs to the lineage of American jazz piano while bringing a highly personal approach informed by straight‑ahead jazz, bebop, stride and a strong connection to the traditions of swing, ragtime and American popular song. He was first trained in the Suzuki method and later studied at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami and the Manhattan School of Music. Cohen established himself in the early 2010s, notably after reaching the finals of the Thelonious Monk competition in 2011 and winning the American Pianists Awards in 2019. As a trio leader, soloist and accompanist he performs regularly in clubs and festivals on the international jazz scene — from the Village Vanguard to Newport — and has collaborated with artists such as Ron Carter, Jimmy Cobb, Benny Golson, George Coleman and Christian McBride. His discography as a leader includes In the Element (2011), Future Stride (2021), Uptown in Orbit (2022) and Vibe Provider (2024). He also developed the Live from Emmet’s Place project, a concert series broadcast from New York that extended his educational work already present in his Master Legacy Series devoted to dialogue between generations of musicians.
