Joe Lovano

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1952, Joe Lovano grew up in a jazz-rich environment; his father, Tony Lovano, was a saxophonist. Trained early on alto and later tenor, he attended the Berklee College of Music before gaining his first professional experience with Jack McDuff and Lonnie Smith, and later in Woody Herman’s orchestra and Mel Lewis’s big band. Based in New York, Lovano developed a musical language rooted in post-bop, modal jazz and contemporary improvisation, characterized by a full, agile tenor saxophone voice with a strong rhythmic sensitivity. His trajectory also led him into more open contexts, notably in Paul Motian’s trio with Bill Frisell and in John Scofield’s quartet. From 1990 his Blue Note period shaped an important discography, including Landmarks (1990), From the Soul (1992), Universal Language (1993), Tenor Legacy (1994), Rush Hour (1995) and Trio Fascination: Edition One (1998). Subsequently he expanded into various formats, from nonet to the quintet Us Five, and co-founded Sound Prints with Dave Douglas. Since the late 2010s Lovano has pursued a more pared-down approach at ECM, particularly with Trio Tapestry, documented on Trio Tapestry (2019), Garden of Expression (2021) and Our Daily Bread (2023).
