Kenny Barron
Born in Philadelphia in 1943, Kenny Barron has a place in the history of American jazz piano spanning hard bop, post-bop and mainstream jazz. His playing is built on clarity of touch, flexible phrasing and a strong sense of accompaniment. After early beginnings in his hometown, Barron moved to New York in 1961 and quickly performed with James Moody, Lou Donaldson, Roy Haynes and Lee Morgan, before joining Dizzy Gillespie’s orchestra from 1962 to 1966. He later worked with Freddie Hubbard, Yusef Lateef and Stan Getz, while developing an extensive discography as a leader, begun with You Had Better Listen in 1967. His career alternates between trio, solo, duo and larger group formats, with significant attention to standards, original compositions and some Afro-Latin or Brazilian colours, heard on Sambao (1992), Canta Brasil (2002) and Kenny Barron & the Brazilian Knights (2012). Barron also co-founded Sphere, a group centered on Thelonious Monk’s repertoire, and recorded notable albums such as Wanton Spirit (1994), The Art of Conversation with Dave Holland (2014), Concentric Circles (2018), The Source (2023) and Beyond This Place (2024). Alongside performing, he taught for many years at Rutgers and later at the Juilliard School.
