Christian McBride

Born in Philadelphia in 1972, American double‑bass and electric bass player Christian McBride is rooted in the acoustic jazz tradition while incorporating elements of hard bop, modern swing, funk and soul. Settling in New York in the early 1990s, McBride first gained notice as a sideman with figures such as Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson and Joshua Redman before developing his own projects as a leader. His early albums under his own name, including Gettin’ To It (1994) and Sci‑Fi (2000), established a writing style where firmly grounded bass lines sit alongside melodic arrangements and a pronounced taste for R&B‑influenced grooves. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s he alternated between quartet, trio and quintet formats, led the group Inside Straight and a big band documented on The Good Feeling (2011), and later explored a rougher, piano‑less aesthetic with Christian McBride’s New Jawn, first released on record in 2018. Active on New York club stages as well as major international festivals, he also works as an educator, takes part in various educational programs, serves as artistic director of the Newport Jazz Festival and hosts the show Jazz Night in America, extending his role as a key communicator in contemporary jazz.
