Pugilist

Of Scottish and New Zealand origin and based in Melbourne, Pugilist has been developing since the 2010s a trajectory rooted in the most underground areas of electronic music, between minimal dubstep, dub techno, jungle, breaks and bass music. As both producer and DJ, Pugilist crafts tracks that are at once dry and hazy, where the weight of the bass, dub echoes and fractured rhythms often take precedence over showy effects. His discography has been built through releases on labels such as Modern Hypnosis, Samurai Music and 3024, contexts that link soundsystem culture, club experimentation and the UK bass legacy. As a DJ, Pugilist upholds the same logic of movement between styles, with sets that shift from deep atmospheres to more upfront selections without severing the thread between groove, tension and texture. This work, carried out from Melbourne but nourished by British and New Zealand references, has also been extended by the launch of his own label, Ruff Kutz.
