Merzbow (メルツバウ) is a vegan, straight edge noise project by Masami Akita from Japan. Merzbow started out in the early 1980s noise industrial scene and began releasing music. In the 1990s, Merzbow was influenced by grindcore and released an album on the death metal label Relapse. In the late 1990s, he connected with Mego's 'punk computer music' and was one of the first in the Japanese noise scene to adopt a live performance technique using laptop computers.
Since around 2003, he has practiced veganism from the perspective of animal rights. He creates works on themes such as anti-whaling, anti-dolphin fishing, anti-fur, and the liberation of livestock animals. In recent years, he has been creating music that is not limited to digital or analog. He has also been experimenting with incorporating AI into album artwork.
He has collaborated with Balazs Pandi, Mats Gustafsson, Thurston Moore, Boris, Keiji Haino, Richard Pinhas (Heldon), Duenn, Nyantra, Lawrence English, Xiu Xiu, Gezan, Alessandro Cortini, Vanity Productions, Vatican Shadow, Bastard Noise, Meat Beat Manifesto and others.
Iggor Cavalera is a Brazilian musician. Along with his older brother Max Cavalera, he is a founding member of the Brazilian thrash metal band Sepultura. He is now the drummer for Cavalera Conspiracy, Soulwax, Petbrick and other projects. Cavalera is one half of the DJ duo Mixhell, a project he founded with his wife, Laima Leyton, in 2006. Although drumming has been his main activity since the 1980s, Iggor has always experimented with electronic instruments such as drum machines and synthesisers. He is also a music producer and experimental artist.
Eraldo Bernocchi is an Italian composer, arranger, producer and guitarist. Starting his career in the late 1970s as a guitarist in independent punk bands, in the mid-1980s he co-founded the conceptual audio project Sigillum-S (with Paolo Bandera and Luca di Giorgio), which grew into an international cult act. In the 1990s, together with graphic designer and video artist Petulia Mattioli, he started to create a series of audiovisual projects and collaborations. A sound explorer, he has collaborated with numerous artists including Bill Laswell, Nils Petter Molvaer, Harold Budd, Russell Mills, Toshinori Kondo, Raiz and Almamegretta, DJ Disk, Thomas Fehlmann, Zu, DJ Olive, Markus Stockhausen, Giovanni Lindo Ferretti, Robin Guthrie, Colin Edwin, Balazs Pandi, Hoshiko Yamane and Flowdan.
