Culcha Candela

Formed in Berlin in 2001, Culcha Candela brings together members from diverse origins (Germany, Uganda, Poland, Colombia) around a blend of dancehall, reggae, hip‑hop and Latin sounds. The collective gradually established itself on the German‑speaking scene with a debut album, “Union Verdadera” (2002), which set the foundation of its aesthetic, marked by lyrics in German, English and Spanish. Culcha Candela then refined this fusion on “Next Generation” (2005) and on the eponymous album “Culcha Candela” (2007), where the group developed a format more oriented toward urban pop and sung choruses. The releases “Schöne neue Welt” (2009) and “Flätrate” (2011) confirmed this trajectory, balancing festive, dancehall‑led tracks with more narrative songs addressing social issues and everyday life. With “Zu wahr um schön zu sein” (2013), “Candelistan” (2015) and “Feel Erfolg” (2017), Culcha Candela continued to cross digital reggae, rap and Latino influences, while remaining a strong presence on festival stages and tours in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The crew‑based mode of operation, alternating singing and rapping, remains at the core of Culcha Candela’s identity, using collective energy and linguistic diversity to structure their songs.
