Ego Ella May
Based in south London, Ego Ella May has been developing since the mid-2010s a musical world positioned between neo-soul, contemporary jazz and alternative R&B. After a self-produced first EP, Zero, released in 2014, she refined her songwriting on Breathing Underwater in 2017 and on So Far in 2019, where her supple singing and introspective lyrics take on a clearer presence. Her debut album, Honey For Wounds, was released in 2020 and continued this trajectory with broader arrangements, underpinned by soul harmonies, grooves borrowed from the London jazz scene and a very organic approach to composition. Ego Ella May is part of a movement in the UK that brings the current jazz scene closer to an independent soul informed by spoken word, gospel and black British music. Her work favors often measured tempos, flowing melodies and a hushed vocal, with an attention to detail that allows instruments to breathe as much as the words. In this way she has built a coherent path across short formats, an album and circulation on British soul and jazz stages.
