My Baby

Formed in Amsterdam in the early 2010s, the Dutch–New Zealand trio My Baby brings together singer‑guitarist Cato van Dijck, her brother Joost van Dijck on drums and New Zealand guitarist Daniel “Dafreez” Johnston. Between psychedelic blues, roots rock and hypnotic grooves drawn as much from trance as from funk and gospel, My Baby develops a music centered on repetitive riffs, incantatory vocals and long, jam‑like structures. The band made a name for itself on club and festival stages in the Netherlands and then across Europe, building its shows around rhythmic progressions tied to dance culture. Their debut album, “My Baby Loves Voodoo!” (2013), established this approach mixing rural blues with contemporary energy, deepened with “Shamanaid” (2015) and “Prehistoric Rhythm” (2017), which emphasized the tribal aspect and certain Afrobeat influences. With “Mounaiki – By the Bright of Night” (2018), My Baby offered a more narrative record, while the live album “Live!” (2019) documents the central role of performance in the band’s identity. Frequently touring, My Baby continues to explore a sound where slide guitar, spiritual‑inspired backing vocals and a minimal rhythm section create an aesthetic that is raw, repetitive and immersive.
