Alewya

Born in Saudi Arabia to an Egyptian–Sudanese father and an Ethiopian mother, raised in Sudan and later based in west London after her family moved to the UK, Alewya Demmisse has built a career at the crossroads of music, imagery and the visual arts. Performing as Alewya, she has developed a style that blends singing, spoken word and rhythmic tension, operating in a space where alternative pop, R&B and electronic music meet, with pronounced percussion and references to both her African and Arab heritage and the London scene. After working briefly as a model and as a sculptor and illustrator, Alewya launched her music career with the single “Sweating” in 2020 and followed in 2021 with “The Code”, recorded with Moses Boyd. That year she also appeared on Little Simz’s “Where’s My Lighter”, toured the UK with the rapper and released the EP Panther in Mode, driven by tracks such as “Jagna”, “Sprit_X”, “Play” and “Ethiopia”, which she also performed for A COLORS SHOW. Alewya is therefore part of a British scene where club formats, experimental pop and diasporic influences circulate freely.
