Malka Family
Founded in Paris in 1988 around Joseph Guigui and Laurent Isaac Cohen, and following the Chez Roger Boîte Funk parties launched the year before, Malka Family developed a French funk informed by P-Funk, soul, brass-heavy grooves and hip‑hop accents. Conceived as a collective with a fluid lineup, the group brings together several singers and instrumentalists, giving prominence to keyboards, bass, percussion and the horn section. Malka Family released their first album, Malka On The Beach, in 1991, then Tous des Oufs in 1992, a record that further explored their funk aesthetic and space‑opera imagery, with contributions from Sidney, Dee Nasty, Marco Prince and Juan Rozoff. This was followed by Fricassée 2 Funk and Fracassée 2 Freaks in 1994, the live album Faites du Bruit / Live 90‑94 in 1995, and Fotoukonkass in 1997. Very active on stage during the 1990s, Malka Family performed in France and several other European countries before disbanding at the end of that period. The collective’s return in 2015 revived Malka Family’s live and recording activity, with Le Retour du Kif in 2017 and Superlune in 2021.
