What so not
An electronic project born in Sydney, What So Not emerged in the early 2010s as a duo formed by Flume and producer Chris Emerson (aka Emoh Instead), before becoming Emerson’s solo project from 2015. Part of the Australian bass-music wave, What So Not crafts a sound that sits between trap, future bass and electronica, combining pronounced melodic lines, floating synthetic textures and heavy percussion influenced both by hip-hop and club culture. After the EPs 7 Dollar Bill (2011), The Quack EP (2013), Gemini (2015) and Divide & Conquer (2016), the trajectory continued with the album Not All the Beautiful Things in 2018, where What So Not crosses paths with the worlds of Skrillex, Toto and Rome Fortune in a more narrative format, and then with Anomaly in 2022, which pushes the contrasts between atmospheric passages and dancefloor-oriented sequences further. Highly present on international club and festival stages, What So Not frequently collaborates with RL Grime, George Maple and San Holo, while maintaining an identity centered on evolving song structures, crafted vocal hooks and a marked use of dynamic breaks that place the project on the boundary between mainstream electronic music and more experimental explorations.
