Triosence
Formed in 1999 in Germany around pianist Bernhard Schüler, Triosence develops melodic jazz that blends trio-writing, a sense of song, and influences borrowed from pop, Latin music and more contemporary rhythms. The group initially formed with Matthias Akeo Nowak on double bass and Stephan Emig on drums, before Cuban bassist Omar Rodriguez Calvo joined in 2017 alongside Schüler and Emig. Triosence drew notice in the early 2000s in the German jazz circuit, notably after the Jugend jazzt competition, and then released First Enchantment in 2002, Away for Awhile in 2005 and When You Come Home in 2008. With Where Time Stands Still in 2010, Turning Points in 2013, the live One Summer Night in 2014, Hidden Beauty in 2017, Scorpio Rising in 2019 and Giulia in 2022, Triosence refined a legible aesthetic centered on melody, collective dialogue and a flexible band dynamic where the piano does not systematically dominate the ensemble. Present on club and festival stages in Germany as well as internationally, Triosence advocates a form of accessible jazz without being polished, where improvisation remains tied to singing themes and to a very balanced trio dynamic.
