André Ceccarelli

French drummer born in Nice in 1946, André Ceccarelli trained early on in the local scene before joining the jazz‑rock group Troc in the early 1970s, where he developed a style combining electric energy and a strong sense of swing. Later in Paris he was much in demand as a studio musician and accompanied numerous artists of the chanson française—most notably Claude Nougaro—while simultaneously maintaining a career firmly rooted in jazz and improvised music. From the 1980s his activity alternated between sideman recordings, collaborations with musicians such as Dee Dee Bridgewater and Enrico Rava, and projects under his own name, including the fusion album Ceccarelli (1979) and the more acoustic Golden Land (2011). He also shines in compact lineups, notably the trio Sud with Sylvain Luc and Jean‑Marc Jafet, where he cultivates tight interplay between guitar, bass and drums. His playing is marked by great versatility—moving between modern jazz, a bebop legacy, rock influences and a lighter approach derived from popular variety music—allowing him to perform in clubs, on major festival stages and in studios for film and television soundtracks. This trajectory has made André Ceccarelli a central figure in the recent history of jazz drumming in France, present across several generations of recordings.
