Tingvall Trio
Formed in the early 2000s in Hamburg, the Tingvall Trio brings together Swedish pianist Martin Tingvall, Cuban double-bassist Omar Rodriguez Calvo and German drummer Jürgen Spiegel around an acoustic, piano-centered jazz. The group fits within the lineage of contemporary European trios; its repertoire is almost exclusively composed by Martin Tingvall and blends clearly defined melodies, influences from Scandinavian folk, touches of classical music and rhythmic accents from Cuba. After a first studio album, “Skagerrak” (2006), the trio followed with “Norr” (2008) and “Vattensaga” (2009), establishing a structured approach of short, song-like pieces. “Vägen” (2011) and the live album “In Concert” (2013) attest to steady stage work across jazz clubs and European festivals, with attention to collective dynamics and shifts in mood. The releases “Beat” (2014) and “Cirklar” (2017) confirm a direction toward melodic, accessible jazz, where the trio seeks a balance between improvisation and repetitive motifs. The albums “Dance” (2020) and “Birds” (2023) extend this aesthetic, playing on contrasts between rhythmic drive, more contemplative atmospheres and tight interplay among the three musicians.
