Tommy Castro
Born in San Jose, California in 1955, Tommy Castro has been part of the San Francisco Bay blues scene since the 1970s. A singer and guitarist, Castro developed a repertoire where electric blues intersects with rhythm and blues, soul and a rock rooted in ensemble playing. After stints in NiteCry and the Dynatones, he formed the Tommy Castro Band in the early 1990s and released Exception to the Rule in 1996, followed by Right as Rain in 1997, Guilty of Love in 2001 and Soul Shaker in 2005. Around the 2010s Castro tightened his formula with Tommy Castro & The Painkillers, a quartet with a more direct sound combining boogie, urban blues and soul inflections. This period notably includes The Devil You Know (2014), Stompin’ Ground (2017), A Bluesman Came to Town (2021) and Closer to the Bone (2023). Throughout his career Castro alternates studio albums and live recordings, with a trajectory tied to clubs, festivals and the North American blues circuit.
